EX-hurricane Gonzalo has brought torrential rain and damaging winds to Donegal.Driving conditions in the county have been described as treacherous with flood waters affecting many roads.Gardaí are warning motorists to take extreme caution on the roads. They say conditions are expected to remain poor right through the morning, with extra caution needed.A wind gust close to 90km/hr was recorded at the Met Eireann station at Finner just after midnight as the storm took hold, with gusts increasing throughout the night.Coastal areas of Donegal are getting the worst of the weather. The Irish Coast Guard has issued a warning to people driving or living along the coast. “The morning should see highest wave heights off the Donegal of up to 7 or 8 meters,” said a spokesman.“Thankfully the height of the storm does not coincide with high water. However coastal areas, cliffs and piers may still be very dangerous. Please exercise caution and use common sense – the next breaking wave may be much bigger and could just be the one that sweeps you away.”Gonzalo lost its tropical storm status yesterday and is now classed as an ‘extra-tropical’ depression. “A woman of fortitude”, this is the centenary theme bestowed upon Albertina Sisulu as the country celebrated her profound legacy she left behind in 2018. Albertina Sisulu was a fearless champion of democracy, human rights and one of the leaders who contributed to the 1956 Women’s march against the apartheid pass laws to the Union Buildings in Pretoria.Remembering her legacy, on Tuesday, 23 April two special commemorative stamps celebrating the life of Albertina Sisulu were officially handed over to her family by the South African Post Office. The two stamps feature different stages of her life.As the country celebrates 25 years of democracy, it is most imperative that such acknowledgements of our struggle stalwart be a reminder to all citizens of the fight endured to attain the freedom and democracy we are privileged to have. These stamps not only celebrate the life of Ma Sisulu but rather an important part of South Africa’s history and heritage shared with the world. The stamps can be used as postage on any ordinary South African standard letter and are available at all post offices. Commemorate the legacy of Ma Sisulu not only with a stamp but continue to build on her legacy and fight for greater social and economic inclusion.Follow the conversation on Facebook and Twitter using #MaSisulu100 #GetInvolved @PlayYourPartSA
Armyman Vijay Kumar Sharma showed ice cool nerves and superb big match temperament as he crowned himself in glory by winning an Olympic silver medal in the rapid fire pistol event.Shooting is all about how calm you can stay and handle the pressure. There is no scope for distraction or letting even a distant fly affect you when you take aim at the targets. With the International Shooting Federation (ISSF) changing the format this time just for the rapid fire event, it’s extremely demanding on how the shooters perform in two courses in two days and then gear up for the final. So drastic has been the change that Russian Alexei Klimov, who shot 592 out of 600 in the prelim phase, hobbled out of the final, which is like an elimination between six shooters.”I must tell you this is a sport all about how focussed you can stay. I have been preparing for years for the Olympics and it’s a sacrifice well worth it. I dedicate this medal to my father Bankur Ram Sharma and my mother,” said the 26-year-old silver medallist. And the champion was quick to add “I am what I am because of the Indian Army and this medal is for my countrymen,” said Vijay, a havildar in the Dogra Regiment. After Armyman Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore won a silver medal in Athens 2004, this is India’s first silver medal in the Olympics.Vijay also did not forget to thank his coach Pavel Smirnov, who has helped him for one-and-a-half years now.”My coach and I trained hard in Germany before coming over to London,” said Vijay.advertisement”I haven’t been home so long, I want to go to Himachal Pradesh,” said Vijay, who had to go for a dope test after the event.Having scored 585 out of 600 in the preliminary phase, Vijay knew he had to come back in the afternoon and start all over again.Watching the five targets situated at a distance of 25 metres, Vijay had to shoot at all of them in four seconds. If you look at Vijay from the stands in the indoor hall, you will wonder how he shoots those four targets with virtually no part of his body moving.Train your binoculars on him or see him on the giant electronic screen and you will notice how he takes aim. It’s a classic piece of action.Standing side-on, he takes aim and it’s just the gentle shoulder movement from right to left as he fires at the five targets. Each miss proves costly and on this day, instead of the medal being decided at a score comprising prelim plus final, it was just the final score.Vijay knew he had to stand like a statue, not blink an eyelid and gently keep squeezing the trigger. It’s a motion which went on for almost 35 minutes in the final. Finally, as four shooters dropped out, it was a fight between Cuba’s Leuris Pupo and Vijay. The Indian knew even if he had shot a perfect score of five in the sixth series in the final, it wouldn’t have sufficed as Pupo had taken a lead. Amidst pin-drop silence, Pupo shot a four and Vijay two. There was no celebration, no emotion from Vijay Kumar even after he had won silver. He took off his cap, removed the ear plugs and dismantled his weapon. It was only when he went to the medal ceremony and the India flag went up, Vijay first almost stood at attention and then raised his arms.As a sportsperson from the Indian Army, Vijay knows he has to keep his emotions in check. His demeanour is different and there is no outward show of excitement.”I have won so many medals before and this was missing from my collection. Olympic glory is the ultimate thing and I need to be back with my family,” said the shooter who trains in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh.Talking about the two days he has spent in his event, Vijay said: “We are trained for this kind of gruelling stuff. And yes, it’s only after joining the Indian Army did I take up shooting.”

lee corso cries on college gamedayESPN’s College GameDay only had one game to cover Saturday morning, but the program certainly made the most of its air time. In honor of Lee Corso’s time spent at Navy, where he was the defensive backs coach from 1966 to 1968, GameDay put together a feature that included footage of his days in Annapolis. The segment, which you can view below, actually made Corso cry live on television. Rece Davis, Desmond Howard and Kirk Herbstreit were also taken aback. Here’s the entire feature, via ESPN. If it doesn’t work on your mobile device, you can view it here.Very cool. Props to ESPN for honoring one of the most beloved people in the sport.
