MPs welcome Gordhan’s debt measures

first_img25 October 2012 MPs have welcomed Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan’s measures to clamp down on South Africa’s public debt, following his tabling of the Medium Term Budget Policy Statement in the National Assembly in Cape Town on Thursday. African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) MP Steve Swart said Gordhan had “sent a very strong message to investors and credit rating agencies, that we are following a prudent fiscal path and that we are busy with debt consolidation to reduce our government debt in the long term”. Swart added that Gordhan had also sent out a strong message on tackling corruption and wasteful expenditure, while managing to stick closely to his Budget forecasts in February. He described a cover article on South Africa in The Economist last week as “alarmist”, and had failed to take into account President Jacob Zuma’s discussion with business and labour earlier this month, or the fact that South Africa was on course from a fiscal perspective of debt consolidation. “Yes, there are aspects of our domestic economy that are of a concern, such as the illegal strikes … but I believe in the long run we are going to see a very conservative fiscal policy with a slightly looser monetary policy, which will stand us in good stead,” Swart said. Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Tim Harris welcomed the spending freeze, which he said would consolidate fiscal consolidation, which is something investors would be pleased to hear. But he said that South Africa’s deficit was expected to rise to 4.8% this year, which he said was double that of other emerging markets, while the country’s debt ratio of 41% of gross domestic product (GDP) was significantly above other emerging markets, which averaged about 35% of GDP. Harris added that the government needed to put more emphasis on insuring that reforms and plans that it had come up with – such as the youth wage subsidy – were put into action. Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) MP Mario Ambrosini said the middle class would suffer the most with sluggish growth, through higher electricity costs and taxes and higher food prices. He said South Africa would only get out of its present rut if it addressed ways to increase productivity and developed a sustainable economic growth model that did not depend on subsidies. A Case of Indecent Exposure: iChatr Pulled From App Store

first_imgTags:#Apple#news#web mike melanson Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting It looks like Apple is continuing its anti-porn crusade, but this time around it isn’t even porn it’s going after, it’s the iPhone app iChatr, the portable version of everyone’s favorite random webcam encounter service, Chatroulette. It’s been just over a week since iChatr hit the App Store and already, it it has met with an untimely end, according to the app’s developer, SKJM. But why?Unsurprisingly, it appears that iChatr users were doing what had become a tradition of sorts with Web counterpart Chatroulette – exposing themselves. From the blog post on SKJM’s website:The iChatr application has currently been removed from the App Store due to reports of a number of users exposing themselves during the random video chat sessions. We are currently discussing possible solutions to the problem with Apple.(This is why we can’t have nice things.) Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… We have to say, it seems a bit absurd to block an app simply because of the way people use it. What is the defining point here? Is it a lack of accountability or is it simply the randomness of the encounter? We’ve already seen that the iPhone 4’s FaceTime video chat will likely be the vehicle by which much adult entertainment is delivered – what will Apple do to silence this menace? While others surely won’t be disturbed at the disappearance of iChatr and its preponderance of (ahem) “dangly bits”, this is one of those “it’s the principle” situations. We certainly weren’t rushing out to see or be seen, randomly, but we would defend others’ rights to expose and be exposed as they see fit.Apple’s expectation to keep its iPhone pure and untouched by the unseemly goes a bit far in its reach. Blocking an app simply for the fact of one’s ability to point a camera in a direction the company doesn’t agree with doesn’t make much sense in this age of Web 2.0, where everyone has the ability to produce, display and disseminate content. The same distribution of “inappropriate” material is easily achieved with the Facebook app or any number of other apps. Sure, apps like Facebook or FaceTime inherently involve people we know and implied consent, but then there is the rest of the Web – all scary and full of anonymous, unpredictable people who may, at any given moment, expose themselves in our general direction. What You Need To Know About The iPhone 5S

first_imgTags:#Apple#custom smartphones#iOS 7#iPhone#mobile dan rowinski Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces Apple today unveiled the iPhone 5S, the latest top-end smartphone from the labs at Cupertino. The iPhone 5S takes Apple to a level of luxury that it has not breached before, rendering obsolete its history of white and black iPhones and replacing them with high-grade aluminum that will come in silver, gold and “space gray.” But the iPhone 5S is a lot more than just a good-looking smartphone. Apple is calling it the “most forward-thinking phone yet.”Apple revamped the internal architecture that runs the iPhone 5S to include a new A7 computer processor, a PC-like 64-bit kernel and a new processor it is calling “M7” (a “motion coprocessor”) that will continually monitor motion data. Apple claims that the iPhone 5S is 40 times faster than the original iPhone released in 2007 and five times faster than the iPhone 5. The camera on the iPhone 5S is a new “five-element Apple designed lens” with a F2.2 aperture that the company says has a 15% larger sensor area and “true tone flash” that is designed to take more realistic looking pictures with the new camera. The flash has two LED-based lights to help balance light quality with each individual picture. The camera app has been updated in iOS 7 to support the new sensor and flash that Apple says that it will support 1000 unique variations of light settings. The pixels are bigger in the iPhone 5S camera, allowing for a clearer picture from the iPhone 5. The video setting captures HD streams at 720 pixels at 120 frames per second. The iPhone 5S also comes with a fingerprint sensor that Apple is calling “Touch ID.” It uses your fingerprint on the “Home” button to authenticate you as the user and unlock the device. The Home button is covered with sapphire crystal so it won’t scratch and surrounded by a stainless steel “detection ring” that knows when you are pushing your finger against the button.Touch ID can be used for authenticating the user when buying apps in the App Store (no more entering your iTunes ID to buy apps). The Home button and Touch ID are thin at 170 microns. It reads your fingerprint at 500 pixels per inch resolution scans in 360 degrees, meaning you can touch it from any angle and it will unlock your phone. Apple says that your fingerprint will never be uploaded to Apple’s servers or its iCloud service and that other apps on the iPhone will not be able to access Touch ID in any way. The iPhone 5S will run Apple’s new iOS 7 operating system that has a sleek “flat” new design and a variety of new features to take advantage of the new 64-bit architecture on the phone. The iPhone 5S will retail at $199 for the 16GB version, $299 for 32GB and $399 for 64GB on a two-year contract. The iPhone 5S will be available September 13 for pre-orders and available in stores on September 20th in the United States, Canada, Australia, China, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore and the United Kingdom. Overall the iPhone 5S will be available in 100 countries on 270 different mobile carriers. It will be available on all four major carriers in the U.S.Apple also announced that its iPhone 4S will stick around in its product lineup and that an 8GB version will be available for free on contract.Image courtesy REUTERS/Stephen Lam What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech …center_img Related Posts The Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technology Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagementlast_img read more

Understanding Residency When Filing Servicemember Taxes

first_imgBy Carol ChurchMost of us prefer to get our taxes filed as quickly, simply, and painlessly as possibly, hopefully with the minimum paid and a maximum refunded. However, as we’ve emphasized in our blogs on service member taxes, it’s very important for members of the military to understand the special benefits, deductions, and options they have available that can help them to reduce their tax liability. One such benefit that can be confusing relates to state of residency for service members and spouses. State of residency is important because it can affect whether service members and their spouses pay state income tax.State of Legal Residence: Service MembersWhere an active duty service member files taxes is not based on where he or she is currently living, but rather on his or her state of legal residency, also often referred to as his or her home of record. This is the state the service member legally claims as his or her home state. Often, it is the state in which the member enlisted. This is the state in which the service member should file taxes.Flickr/Chris Waits. CC BY 2.0If there is any confusion about a service member’s state of legal residence, it can be located on his or her Leave and Earnings Statement.State of legal residency can be changed, but not without filing the proper paperwork. Note that it may sometimes may be in the family’s best interest to change state of legal residency (for instance, if a PCS takes you to a state with no income tax).State of Legal Residency: Spouses of Service MembersIn 2009, Congress passed the Military Spouse Residency Relief Act (MSRRA) Under the terms of the law, military spouses (who are not in the military themselves) may also be able to claim legal residency in the same state as their spouse. This simplifies state income taxes and may help reduce tax liability.Qualifying to Claim Legal Residency in Another state as a Military SpouseIn order for military spouses to claim legal residency in a state other than the one in which they live, they must:Be living in the non-home state due to a PCS;Be living in the non-home state solely to be with their spouse;Have previously lived in the state they desire to claim as a home state and be able to prove residency thereNote: If the spouse plans to file taxes in a state other than the one in which they live, but the spouse earns income in the state where they currently reside, they may need to declare nonresidency for tax withholding purposes, so that their employer handles taxes correctly. If a nonresident spouse’s employer has withheld state taxes anyway, he or she may need to file a nonresident return with that state in order to receive a refund.Filing State Income TaxesSo, when servicemembers and spouses who live in a state other than the one where they hold legal residency file tax returns, how does state income tax work? It varies by state, but typically these laws help reduce tax liability for service members and spouses. Report: PSG 6 Bordeaux 2

first_imgParis Saint-Germain 6 Bordeaux 2: Neymar, Cavani dispel rift rumours in emphatic victory Tom Webber Last updated 2 years ago 00:56 1/10/2017 PSG - cropped Bongarts Paris Saint-Germain secured a phenomenal 6-2 victory over Bordeaux, with Neymar and Edinson Cavani proving there is no rift between them. Neymar and Edinson Cavani brought a resounding end to talk of a rift between them as Paris Saint-Germain romped to a stunning 6-2 victory over Bordeaux at the Parc des Princes.Reports of ill feeling between the two surfaced after an on-field disagreement over penalty-taking duties during the 2-0 win over Lyon a fortnight ago, but they showed that is firmly behind them on Saturday.PSG were awarded a spot-kick in the 40th minute following a foolish handball by Otavio and Neymar converted it before turning to celebrate with Cavani, who won their argument against Lyon but was denied from 12 yards. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Why Barcelona god Messi will never be worshipped in the same way in Argentina Lyon treble & England heartbreak: The full story behind Lucy Bronze’s dramatic 2019 Liverpool v Man City is now the league’s biggest rivalry and the bitterness is growing Megan Rapinoe: Born & brilliant in the U.S.A. That was Neymar’s second of the match, the Brazilian having opened the scoring with a sublime free-kick and setting up Cavani for his eighth Ligue 1 goal in as many outings this term.Unai Emery’s intention to attack was clear from his selection of Julian Draxler in place of Thiago Motta – one of four changes from the 3-0 Champions League victory over Bayern Munich on Wednesday – and the German rewarded his coach with a scintillating volley and an assist for Kylian Mbappe in the second half.Thomas Meunier also netted with Younousse Sankhare and a Malcom penalty providing Bordeaux’s consolations as Jocelyn Gourvennec’s side suffered their first league defeat of the season, meaning PSG are the only unbeaten team left in the top flight.PSG took just five minutes to get on the scoreboard. Mbappe’s quick feet drew a foul from experienced defender Jeremy Toulalan in a central position 30 yards out and Neymar dispatched a beautiful free-kick that spun away from Benoit Costil and into the top-left corner.Seven minutes later the hosts’ captivating front three linked up magnificently to double their advantage. Mbappe flicked Presnel Kimpembe’s pass inside for Neymar, whose throughball found Cavani running in behind Vukasin Jovanovic to stab past Costil.4 – Neymar has scored & assisted a goal for the 4th time in Ligue 1 this season, more than any other player in the Top 5 leagues. Theo Pellenard held up the ball brilliantly before spinning away from Marco Verratti and sliding a pass into Nicolas de Preville, who squared for Sankhare to add a simple finish.Francois Kamano failed to head on target in a gilt-edged opportunity before Alphonse Areola kept out Malcom, but the visitors were out of the game by half-time. Otavio handled the ball in the box after Kamano failed to clear and Neymar sent Costil the wrong way from the resultant penalty.Draxler made it five when, after launching the break, he met a cross from Mbappe with an exquisite cross-goal volley with the outside of his left boot that gave Costil no chance. After a tepid start to the second period their roles switched, Draxler winning possession in the Bordeaux half and supplying the ball that Mbappe guided across the keeper and inside the far post in the 58th minute.Cavani was warmly applauded as he made way for Angel Di Maria after the hour mark and PSG struggled to threaten in the Uruguayan’s absence.Instead it was Bordeaux who went close as substitute Alexandre Mendy rattled the post and Kamano was kept out by an impressive stop from Areola.Neymar volleyed a chance for his hat-trick wide from a delightful Giovani Lo Celso chip in the 80th minute, but it was another Brazilian who had the final say.Meunier sent Jonathan Cafu tumbling in the box and Malcom slammed the penalty into the top-right corner for a goal that did little to dampen spirits at a jubilant Parc des Princes.Key Opta stats:- PSG have lost only one of their last 13 Ligue 1 games against Bordeaux (W7 D5), in March 2015 (2-3).- PSG have won seven of eight games in Ligue 1 this season, best tally for a team at this stage in the top-flight since Lyon in 2006/07 (also 7 wins).- PSG have lost just one of their last 28 Ligue 1 games (W23 D4), at Nice in April 2017 (1-3).- PSG are unbeaten in their last 28 home games in Ligue 1 (W22 D6), with their last defeat coming in March 2016 against Monaco (0-2).- PSG have scored 27 goals after eight Ligue 1 games in 2017/18, the best tally at this stage in the top-flight since St Etienne in 1969/70 (also 27).- Bordeaux conceded 6+ goals in a Ligue 1 game for the first time since September 2015 against Nice (1-6).- Neymar scored & assisted a goal for the fourth time in Ligue 1 this season, more than any other player in the Top 5 leagues.- Edinson Cavani has been involved in 21 goals in his last 16 Ligue 1 games (16 goals, 5 assists). read morelast_img read more

Report: Inter 2 Benevento 0

first_imgInter 2 Benevento 0: Nerazzurri pick up much-needed win at San Siro Rob Lancaster Last updated 1 year ago 05:52 2/25/18 Milan Skriniar_cropped Emilio Andreoli/Getty Images Benevento are still searching for their first away point in Serie A after conceding twice after the break at the San Siro Second-half goals from Milan Skriniar and Andrea Ranocchia secured Inter a much-needed 2-0 triumph over basement boys Benevento on Saturday. The Nerazzurri’s stuttering season appeared set to plumb new depths against travel-sick opponents until they scored twice in the space of three minutes.Skriniar lifted the mood inside a toxic San Siro when he caught Benevento sleeping at a corner, the defender running on to a bouncing ball to nod home. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Lyon treble & England heartbreak: The full story behind Lucy Bronze’s dramatic 2019 Liverpool v Man City is now the league’s biggest rivalry and the bitterness is growing Megan Rapinoe: Born & brilliant in the U.S.A. A Liverpool legend in the making: Behind Virgil van Dijk’s remarkable rise to world’s best player Ranocchia followed his fellow centre-back’s lead soon after, meeting Joao Cancelo’s inviting free-kick with a firm header that flashed into the bottom right corner of goalkeeper Christian Puggioni’s net.Serie A’s bottom club had proved a major stumbling block until the quickfire double, and even had a stong shout for a penalty at 0-0, Danilo Cataldi denied when appearing to tumble over Ranocchia’s outstretched leg. However, the visitors finished the game with 10 men, Nicolas Viola sent off after receiving two late bookings, as Inter picked up a win that lifts them up to third in the table.4 – No defender has scored more goals than Milan Skriniar in Serie A this season (four goals). Guarantee. #InterBenevento — OptaPaolo (@OptaPaolo) February 24, 2018 For Inter, it’s all about points, not performances. When they won the reverse fixture last October thanks to a brace from Marcelo Brozovic, they were unbeaten in seven games and appeared set to challenge for the Scudetto.Instead, a run of just one win in their last 10 league outings either side of the winter break has abruptly ended any title talk and instead left them in a fight to finish in the top four.Having seen his side struggle in a 2-0 loss at Genoa, Spalletti recalled Ivan Perisic and handed Rafinha his first start since joining from Barcelona, though the returning Mauro Icardi was only deemed fit enough for a place on the bench. The changes failed to inspire the hosts in the first half, though, and it was Benevento who had the best opportunity to score before the break.Massimo Coda’s fierce drive on the counter forced Samir Handanovic into a smart save and immediately triggered a chorus of jeers from a far-from-happy Inter faithful. At the other end, Gaetano Letizia’s well-timed tackle stopped Antonio Candreva from calling Puggioni into action, the forward seeing the ball taken off his left foot just as he was set to pull the trigger.Matias Vecino finally managed Inter’s first on-target attempt in the 54th minute, unleashing a 25-yard shot that Puggioni punched over for a corner in rather unorthodox fashion.Cataldi was outraged when the officials failed to point to the spot after his clash with the clumsy Ranocchia, who quickly made an impact in the opposite box to put the game beyond Benevento.By that stage Skriniar had finally broken the deadlock, heading home his fourth goal of the season via a deflection off the underside of the crossbar.Benevento’s misery was complete with the dismissal of Viola, leaving them still without an away point in Serie A. CWG gold medallist weightlifter Sanjita Chanu’s provisional suspension revoked

first_img Press Trust of India New DelhiJanuary 23, 2019UPDATED: January 23, 2019 11:50 IST Since the provisional ban on her last year, Sanjita Chanu has claimed innocence in the doping case. (Reuters Photo)HIGHLIGHTSSanjita Chanu was tested positive for anabolic steroid testosterone last yearSanjita was put under provisional suspension from May 15, 2018The IWF had admitted to committing a mistake in giving the exact sample number of Sanjita in its reportThe International Weightlifting Federation has revoked the provisional suspension on weightlifter K Sanjita Chanu for a failed dope test, a major reprieve for the two-time Commonwealth Games gold-medallist who has claimed innocence. In a case that has dragged on for almost a year and has been marred by an “administrative” goof-up in Sanjita’s sample number, the IWF informed that a final decision on the matter is expected in the coming days.”On the basis of the information at its disposal, the IWF has decided that the provisional suspension of the athlete (Khumukcham Sanjita) shall be lifted as of today (22 January 2019),” IWF’s legal counsel Eva Nyirfa said in an e-mail sent to the national federation and Sanjita.”The IWF Hearing Panel will render its decision on the athlete’s case in due course,” it added. The 25-year-old Sanjita, who had won a gold in the women’s 53kg category at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, had tested positive for anabolic steroid testosterone. Her urine sample was taken prior to the World Championships in United States in November 2017, and she was put under provisional suspension from May 15 last year.A final decision of the IWF panel is yet to come but Sanjita said her assertion of innocence has been vindicated.”I have got a mail from the international federation and our national federation has also called me up this morning informing about the lifting of the (provisional) suspension. I am relieved and happy. I am innocent and I have never taken any banned substance in my career. I am vindicated now,” she told PTI from her native place in Manipur.advertisement”At the same time, I experienced mental trauma during these past 8-9 months (since May 15 last year) due to the mistake of the international federation. I hope nothing like this happen to any athlete in future. An athlete’s reputation is very precious,” she added.Sanjita said the Indian Weightlifting Federation had asked her to join the national camp immediately if she wants.”The federation official told me today to write if I want to join national camp. I am doing that. I missed the Asian Games and World Championships in 2018. I want to compete in the World Championships this year and qualify for 2020 Olympics. For any athlete, Olympics is the ultimate,” she said. The international body informed about her doping offence only in May last year. That meant the Manipuri weightlifter participated in the Gold Coast CWG, where she finished top of the podium. She had also won gold in the 48kg in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The IWF had, in July last year, admitted to committing a mistake in giving the exact sample number of Sanjita in its report. The world body had mentioned two different urine sample numbers in its communication of her dope flunk. The urine sample of Sanjita was taken out-of-competition on November 17, 2017 and the laboratory results of the tests conducted in the United States was handed to the international body on December 20. The communication of her failed dope test was given to Sanjita only on May 15 last year and her ‘B’ sample returned positive on September 11.Her representatives then appeared before a IWF hearing panel on October 19 in Budapest, Hungary. She presented her submissions on October 19 itself and on November 1.In a communication to Sanjita — a rare instance while a doping procedure is ongoing — the IWF hearing panel had said that “the case appears to be complicated”.Sanjita’s doping issue even reached the Prime Minister’s Office which directed the Sports Ministry to look into the matter. For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
